The Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav stands as one of the most iconic religious celebrations in India, drawing millions of devotees every year. Established in 1954 by Shankarayya, then a corporator, the tradition began with a modest 1-foot idol. Over the decades, the Khairatabad Ganesh idol has grown not only in height but also in spiritual and cultural importance.
In 2024, the Utsav reached a historic milestone with a 70-foot idol marking the 70th anniversary. For 2025, the idol stands at 69 feet tall, slightly reduced due to logistical concerns. Despite this adjustment, the grandeur and devotion surrounding the celebration remain unchanged.
The Khairatabad Ganesh is often referred to as the “wish-fulfilling Ganesh,” with devotees comparing its significance to holy centers like Tirupati and the Kumbh Mela. The idol continues to inspire faith and devotion, making the Utsav a major spiritual attraction during Ganesh Chaturthi.
Community involvement is at the heart of this celebration. Shankarayya’s daughter, in a recent interview, expressed gratitude to the devotees and urged visitors to follow safety protocols, use public transport, and embrace traditional attire during their visit. She also highlighted the extensive arrangements made for devotees, including medical facilities, prasad distribution, and crowd management systems.
One of the biggest attractions of the Utsav is the daily “Maha Harathi” held at 9 PM. This ritual draws thousands of devotees, filling the atmosphere with divine energy and cultural vibrancy.
As Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav 2025 unfolds, it continues to blend history, devotion, and community service, keeping alive the legacy started over seven decades ago by Shankarayya.
